For generations, families in Las Coloradas in Mexico have harvested candelilla plants to extract their precious wax and used it in everything from lip balm to food coating. But without access to infrastructure and dependent on middlemen, their future looked increasingly uncertain. That all changed when the community earned FSC certification – the first ever for a non-timber forest product from shrubland.
