For years, journalist Maria Ressa has faced prosecution in the Philippines for a story about corruption – a story she didn’t even write, published 13 years ago, before the law she allegedly violated existed. Since 2019, CFJ co-founder Amal Clooney has led Maria’s international legal team. Recently, she and co-founder George Clooney traveled to Manila to stand with Maria at this year’s #SocialGoodSummit and show their support for every journalist in the Philippines facing threats for doing their job. During the visit, Amal and George met with Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., discussing press freedom and expressing support for decriminalizing libel. They highlighted concrete steps the government can take to protect journalists. “Justice must be waged. One case at a time, one country at a time, and without ever giving up.”
