Gaza’s Children Under Fire: UNICEF on the Human Toll of the Conflict
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) spokesperson James Elder highlights the impact of the Gaza conflict on children, noting that “since the ceasefire was announced in October last year, 265 Palestinian children have been killed across Gaza,” calling it “an absurd… devastating figure.” He stresses that during what was “supposedly defined by restraint and protection,” a child has been killed “on average, every single day for more than eight months,” underscoring the gap between expectations of a ceasefire and the reality on the ground.
He emphasizes that these children were not only casualties of active combat but were killed in everyday settings: “in their homes… in their schools… playing football… fishing,” describing how “they were shot, they were bombed… struck by quadcopters.” The statement conveys the indiscriminate nature of the violence and highlights the human toll of the ongoing war on Gaza’s civilian population, particularly its children.
