“The Nakba continues because impunity continues” UN Palestine Committee Chair at Nakba Commemoration

Commemorating the 78th anniversary of the Nakba at UN Headquarters in New York, UN Palestine Committee Chairman reflects on “the catastrophe of dispossession, exile and loss” endured by the Palestinian people in 1948. The statement reminds us that “the Nakba is not a chapter closed in 1948,” but “a continuing catastrophe” felt across generations, in refugee camps, at checkpoints, in demolished homes, and in the lives of millions of Palestine refugees whose rights “cannot expire with time.” The statement draws urgent attention to Gaza, where “entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to dust,” and to the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, where displacement, settler violence and settlement expansion continue. The Chairman calls for a permanent ceasefire, full humanitarian access, accountability under international law, and a just peace rooted in Palestinian self-determination. “This is not a ceasefire. It is less fire. And less fire is not peace.” After 78 years, the message is clear: “The Palestinian people have waited long enough for justice. The world must not ask them to wait any longer.” More details: https://www.un.org/unispal/428th-committee-meeting-nakba78-15may2026/
