Ep. 2: This Is How Carbon Markets Operate Under the Paris Agreement's Article 6

This episode is also available in Spanish in Rumbos Verdes Podcast. Did you know that CO₂ reductions can "travel" from one country to another as if they had a passport? And that some of the reductions achieved by a country like Colombia can be counted toward another country's climate targets? ───────────────────────────── WHAT YOU'LL LEARN In this episode, we open the floor to carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement: a system where emissions cross borders and CO₂ reductions become a currency that can migrate from country to country under international rules. We speak with Iván Darío Valencia, Manager of the SPAR6C Programme in Colombia and former COP negotiator, to unpack the three mechanisms of Article 6 — and how each country's visions, needs, and conditions shaped the negotiations that now define its technical complexities and the challenge of turning global rules into real climate outcomes. We also explore why this article took more than a decade to materialize. In our Green Pathways Chronicle, Felipe De León Denegri, former negotiator for Costa Rica and representative of the Independent Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (AILAC), revisits the days when the San José Principles were born — a defining moment that set the course for international carbon markets. ───────────────────────────── ABOUT GREEN PATHWAYS Thank you for listening to Green Pathways, a podcast created by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). This episode was possible thanks to Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation, SPAR6C program, a 5-year program funded by the Germany Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the International Climate Initiative. Implementation is led globally by the Global Green Growth Institute, with support providers from Carbon Limits, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, Kommunalkredit Public Consulting and GFA Consulting.
