[Event] Heatwaves and Transportation Systems: from Evidence to Action
Heatwaves are increasingly affecting transportation systems globally, posing significant risks to infrastructure, operations, and public safety. This event will showcase the latest evidence on how extreme heat impacts roads, railways, and public transit, drawing from a comprehensive literature review and case studies by the World Bank. Participants will gain insights from the findings in GFDRR's latest publication, "Heatwaves and their Effects on Transportation Systems: A Comprehensive Review". Two World Bank case studies of technical assistance to assess the impact of heatwaves on urban transportation systems and users will illustrate actionable strategies for assessing and building resilience, including innovative engineering solutions, policy frameworks, and cross-sectoral collaboration. The session aims to bridge the gap between research and implementation, encouraging decisive action to support World Bank clients investing in transport infrastructure amid rising temperatures.
