Youth Month 2026 — Honouring the Past, Building the Future

June 1976 changed South Africa forever. Young people in Soweto took to the streets demanding an education system — and a country — that saw them as fully human. Fifty years later, we mark Youth Month not only by remembering their courage but by asking honestly how much of what they fought for has been delivered. Across South Africa, youth unemployment remains one of the defining crises of our time. Young people are searching for pathways into work, further education and economic participation. This month the United Nations — through its agencies working on decent work, skills development, climate resilience and social inclusion — is shining a light on what progress looks like and what still needs to change. This is Youth Month 2026. And the story is far from over.
