Mother Language Day 2026
South Africa's 12 official languages are more than policy — they are the heartbeat of who we are. From isiXhosa to Sepedi, Afrikaans to Tshivenda, each language carries centuries of knowledge, culture and identity.
But languages don't survive on their own. They survive through people. In classrooms and communities across the country, youth need to reclaim, speak and pass on their mother languages, ensuring these treasures are not lost to future generations.
This #InternationalMotherLanguageDay, the United Nations in South Africa🇿🇦 calls on educators, policymakers and communities to champion multilingual education — because when learners are taught in a language they truly understand, classrooms become more inclusive, young voices grow stronger and no child is left behind.
