A Safer Crossing Starts with Better Design

In Poltava, one of the pedestrian crossings spans six lanes of traffic. At the same time, the green signal often does not last long enough for all pedestrians to cross comfortably. One proposed solution is a pedestrian refuge island in the centre of the roadway, combined with a longer green-light phase. This would allow people to stop safely, wait for the next green signal if needed, and continue their journey. In this video, Taras Rudenko, a participant in the Barrier-Free Routes School implemented by UNDP and the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine in Poltava, explains how this solution could work in practice and why truly barrier-free urban environments begin with details like these.
