In Odesa, Ukraine’s maritime hub, more than 50 educational facilities have been damaged since the start of the full-scale invasion, some of them repeatedly. For students and young professionals, this has meant interrupted studies and unsafe learning conditions.
For maritime students, the challenge has been even greater. Practical sea training, essential for future sailors and engine operators, became limited due to safety risks.
To address this issue, UNDP, with financial support from the Government of Japan, equipped a maritime institution in Odesa with a modern navigation bridge simulator and upgraded its training facilities. Today, students can practice ship handling in conditions that closely mirror real-life operations — safely, consistently, and without interruption.
