“I can’t see myself, and teaching someone else who can’t see felt a bit frightening. But I took the guys’ hands and started guiding them – and everything came together for them,” says Ivan, an instructor of a pottery course for veterans who have lost their sight in combat.
To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we’re highlighting the stories behind the Sweden-UNDP supported “Pottery in the Dark” initiative.
Ten veterans have mastered the basics of pottery – gaining not only a therapeutic practice, but also a pathway towards a new profession and future income. The project brings together rehabilitation, social reintegration, and real opportunities for veterans who are rebuilding their lives.
In collaboration with the Ukrainian ethno-band DakhaBrakha, initiative participants created a series of clay pieces to draw attention to the project and amplify support for veterans on their journey forward.
