A Message from the Chair of the Writers for Peace Committee | PEN International
Germán Rojas, Chair of PEN International’s Writers for Peace Committee, reflects on the responsibilities many writers feel in a world marked by growing instability. He highlights the importance of defending freedom of expression, upholding human dignity, and sustaining the values that make peace and justice possible.
The Writers for Peace Committee (WfPC) connects literature and human rights, providing a forum for writers to address conflict, division, and threats to fundamental freedoms. Established in 1984 on the initiative of Slovene writer Miloš Mikeln and based at Slovene PEN, the Committee was created to help bridge divides during the Cold War.
Today, the WfPC continues to promote intercultural dialogue, peace, tolerance, and freedom of expression, while supporting writers living and working in war and conflict zones.
