Restoring Livelihoods after the Jajarkot Earthquake || Story of a Irrigation Canal

#JajarkotEarthquakeRecovery The 2023 Jajarkot earthquake weakened a critical irrigation canal in  Aathabiskot 8, West Rukum. When flash floods struck in 2024, the canal's intake was completely destroyed and cutting off water for 47 farming households and a community watermill serving families across West Rukum and Jajarkot. With support from the Government of Japan, UN-Habitat Nepal and @UNDPNEPAL reconstructed 70 metres of reinforced canal under the Livelihoods Improvement and Disaster Resilience Enhancement in the areas affected by the Jajarkot Earthquake (Jajarkot Earthquake Recovery Project), through a fully community-led process. Water flows again. The mill is running. Livelihoods are recovering. This is one of 45 community infrastructure projects completed across Jajarkot and Rukum West to support earthquake-affected communities. 🙏Welcome to UN-Habitat Nepal 🙏 The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
