Acting before the crisis: how UNICEF protects children from drought in Guatemala

In Chiquimula, where drought threatens nutrition, access to water, and health, UNICEF — together with other United Nations agencies — is activating anticipatory actions to protect children and their families before the crisis worsens. Through the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), brigades have reached more than 6,000 children and 4,000 adolescent girls, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers with integrated services. In addition, 1,021 people have been trained to strengthen nutrition surveillance, prevention, and response in drought-affected contexts. To date, 46 cases of acute malnutrition have been detected, 60% of them identified through the deployment of community brigades, enabling timely treatment and follow-up. Efforts have also improved living conditions in vulnerable communities: more than 14,000 people now live in environments free from open defecation, three health facilities have rehabilitated water and sanitation services benefiting over 6,300 people, and more than 6,500 people are consuming safe water thanks to the distribution of 1,300 water filters. Acting early saves lives. Investing in children today helps build a more resilient future for Guatemala. _______________ El canal oficial de YouTube de UNICEF es tu destino principal para conocer las últimas actualizaciones, documentales, llamamientos de celebridades y más sobre nuestro trabajo para hacer realidad los derechos de cada niño.
