Since 2017, the MRC Secretariat has actively supported discussions and the technical working groups from Lao PDR and Thailand working closely together to develop a broader framework comprising 13 harmonized regulations covering navigation safety, emergency response, pollution prevention, ship inspections, search and rescue operations, tanker safety, and the transport of dangerous goods. This signing of the MOU is a significant milestone in advancing regional cooperation for safer and more sustainable navigation on the Mekong River, while strengthening environmental protection and cross-border connectivity between Lao PDR and Thailand. It also reflects the strong determination of all sides to work on the next steps to implement the MOU for the sustainable development and management of the Mekong River, as a pathway of peace, prosperity and sustainable growth for the benefits of future generations. 🌏⛴️
