Safeguarding Indigenous Heritage: Basket Weaving and Larouman Farming in the Kalinago Territory

Eighteen participants from Dominica's Kalinago Territory completed a powerful Indigenous Basket Weaving Skills and Capacity Building Programme, implemented by the Ayahora Communities of Excellence (ACE) Foundation Inc. with support from the UNDP Climate Promise Programme. The initiative promoted cultural preservation, sustainable livelihoods, and climate resilience through the traditional art of basket weaving and the farming of Larouman – a native reed introduced to Dominica by the Kalinago people. Over four weeks, participants—mostly Indigenous youth and women—learned to create handcrafted pieces while also exploring Larouman’s use as a nature-based solution for environmental protection. This programme is aligned with Dominica’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and reinforces the importance of Indigenous knowledge in the fight against climate change. This video highlights the beauty, heritage, and resilience of the Kalinago people. 📍Project supported by the UNDP Climate Promise and the UNDP Dominica Project Office.
