ASI Thought Leaders Forum | Getting the most out of UK Climate Finance
As the impacts of climate change intensify, the role of climate finance in supporting developing countries to adapt, reduce emissions and build resilience has never been more critical. The UK’s International Climate Fund (ICF) has been central to this effort – from supporting clean energy transitions, advancing climate-smart agriculture, to greening financial systems and promoting nature-based solutions.
Yet, global demand for climate finance is rising rapidly, even as the UK aid budget faces increasing constraints. When more needs to be achieved with less, the question of how and where climate finance can deliver the greatest impact is more important than ever. How can UK ICF achieve the greatest value for money? What should it prioritise? And how can it remain effective, inclusive and future-ready in the face of ongoing political, economic and technological shifts?
To help the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) address these questions and shape their approach towards ICF spending, ASI – in collaboration with the Carbon Trust – conducted a comprehensive review of global investment needs for climate change mitigation. The resulting report outlines priority investment areas for the UK government, grounded in robust evidence on mitigation potential, financing needs, development benefits, cost-effectiveness and UK additionality.
