IDPC warns against 'narcoterrorism' narrative — Statement at #HRC61
At the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, IDPC delivered a statement during the interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights.
Speaking on behalf of 13 civil society organisations, we raised serious concerns about the misuse of “narcoterrorism” narratives to justify extrajudicial killings and unlawful military operations.
Drug trafficking must not be conflated with terrorism
Military targeting of people suspected of drug offences violates international law
Drug policies must fully comply with human rights standards
This intervention highlights the urgent need to move away from punitive, militarised approaches and towards evidence-based, rights-centred drug policies.
