Special Umuganda for Youth | UNICEF
UNICEF Rwanda, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Arts (MoYA), the National Youth Council (NYC), Generation Unlimited, youth-led organizations, and other key stakeholders, joined young people in Gisagara District, Southern Province of Rwanda for the Special Umuganda of Youth.
This activity focused on tree planting to enhance the community’s resilience to climate-related hazards and empower young people to take the lead in addressing environmental challenges and contributing to sustainable development in their communities. More than 2,000 young people—including girls and boys—came together to plant trees in Kibirizi Sector of Gisagara District, in the Southern Province.
The Special Umuganda also marked the national launch of the Green Rising Project, a global Generation Unlimited-led initiative aimed at supporting youth-led climate action, helping 10 million young people be the climate advocates their communities need for a just green transition by 2025. After a day of planting, participants gathered for the Green Rising Concert, where artists performed, and speakers emphasized the urgent need for concrete green actions.
