Safe Water Is Changing Lives in Rusizi, Rwanda | UNICEF Rwanda
In Rusizi, Western Rwanda, access to water has long shaped how people live, learn and stay healthy.
Communities relied on distant and often unsafe sources, especially after floods and landslides damaged water systems. This affected school attendance, health services and daily life.
Today, safe water is closer and more reliable.
Students are able to stay in class and focus on learning. Health centres provide cleaner and more consistent care. Families spend less time collecting water and more time on daily life.
Across the district, restored water systems now reach nearly 43,000 people, including thousands who previously had no access .
The change is visible across communities. Life is more stable, and people are better able to move through their day.
This work is supported by the Government of Japan, in partnership with UNICEF and Rusizi District.
