Islamic Relief’s Flash Flood Response to Sylhet
With the onset of the monsoon season in early June, rainfall spread across various parts of Bangladesh, often resulting in flooding. This year is no exception. Since the second week of June, the flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj has significantly deteriorated due to incessant downpours and the subsequent onrush of water from India's hilly regions. Low-lying areas in these districts have been submerged by heavy rainfall and water from upstream, resulting in flash floods that have inundated major parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj. Nearly 400,000 people in the Sylhet metropolitan area and throughout the district have become stranded. The hardest-hit areas are Gowainghat and Companiganj sub-districts, where submerged roads have disrupted transportation and communication. Additionally, extensive flooding of crop fields and ponds have caused significant losses for farmers.
As a first responder, Islamic Relief immediately distributed dry food to those impacted by the flash floods in Chatak under Sunamganj district on June 23. The food packs included 5 kg of flattened rice, 2 kg of puffed rice, 1 kg of sugar, 15 packs of fortified biscuits, and 6 liters of mineral water. Additionally, Islamic Relief provided hygiene kits to 750 right holders in Companiganj and Sylhet City Corporation, which included sanitary napkins, laundry soap, bathing soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, a pack of oral saline, a bucket, and a mug. These 750 families also received a cash grant of BDT 6000 to repair their homes and for immediate assistance.
