Islamic Relief Brings Hope for Rohingya Children and Adolescents

Since the influx of the Rohingyas, The Government of Bangladesh has accommodated them in a total of 33 highly congested camps situated in the Ukhiya and Teknaf sub-districts. In addition, the Government has constructed a new camp with modern facilities in Bhasan Char. Islamic Relief has been providing life-saving assistance to the relocated Rohingyas since their initial settlement. Various projects have been implemented aiming at improving their quality of life, encompassing crucial provisions such as General Food Assistance, Winter clothing, education, Qurbani meat distribution, Ramadan food support, Livelihood support, LPG distribution, Water Sanitation, and health and hygiene promotion. IRB provided supplementary nutritional food support to a total of 3,393 children aged 25-60 months per child twice a year in the island. Among the relocated Rohingya population, a substantial portion comprises children, with a reported 57% according to UNHCR. Islamic Relief Bangladesh is implementing this exceptional project titled “Life-saving Emergency Support for Rohingya Children living in Bhasan Char, Bangladesh” to improve the quality of life of Rohingya children and adolescents. Islamic Relief Bangladesh has established 10 learning centers in Bhasan Char. Early Child Education is being provided through these facilities, allowing children to familiarize themselves with the learning environment following the Myanmar Curriculum which teaches Math, English, Burmese, Social Science, Social Studies & Life skills. Islamic Relief created multi purposes centers for adolescent boys and girls where they can spend quality time and play. A total of 7,408 children and adolescents receive age-appropriate play materials. Islamic Relief organizes regular health and hygiene promotion sessions for the health and hygiene of adolescents and distributes hygiene kits. 300 adolescents aged between 16-20 years, received life skills training according to their preferences. Islamic Relief provided training in four different trades, sewing, plumbing, gas stove repairing, and basic computer literacy. Islamic Relief has been providing life-saving support to the Rohingyas from the very beginning. Given the substantial needs, we anticipate that additional funding is required to address their overall development.
