Life on the Line: Responding to Bangladesh’s Historic 2024 Flash Floods
In mid-August 2024, devastating floods swept through southeastern Bangladesh, affecting Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur districts. Overflowing rivers and intense rainfall caused the worst flooding the region has seen in over three decades, displacing more than 300,000 people and leaving thousands of families in desperate need of food, clean water, shelter, and medical assistance.
Islamic Relief Bangladesh responded swiftly, mobilizing life-saving aid to the most vulnerable communities within 72 hours.
Our Emergency Response: 💵 Cash assistance of BDT 6,000 to 6,500 households 🎒 Dignity kits distributed to 6,500 families 📋 Comprehensive surveys to identify the most affected households 👩 Priority support for women-led households, widows, the elderly, and pregnant or lactating women 📢 Hygiene awareness sessions for women in target communities ✅ Complaint and feedback mechanisms to ensure transparency
This rapid response was made possible through the generous support of our donors from the Islamic Relief family and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
As we move beyond immediate relief, our focus shifts to long-term rehabilitation—restoring livelihoods and reducing vulnerability to future disasters.
