Shapna’s Story: Resilience on a Small Homestead
Farmers in Nawabganj Upazila face extreme heat, cold, fog, and heavy rains that make food production difficult. But Shapna Mardi is an exception. She has transformed her small homestead using practical, climate-resilient solutions like improved poultry sheds, elevated goat housing, integrated duck–fish farming, and year-round cattle feed.
Shapna also uses vermicompost, mulching, natural pest control, and water-saving irrigation to keep her farm productive throughout the year. Through the Sustainable Livelihoods Development of Extreme Poor Communities (SUPPORT) Project, families like hers are learning climate-smart ways to protect their livelihoods.
Today, her farm provides steady food, nutrition, and income for her family while serving as a learning space for other farmers. Her story shows how simple, smart practices can help communities stay strong as weather patterns become more unpredictable.
Through the SUPPORT project, Islamic Relief Bangladesh is partnering with ethnic minority and ultra-poor households in Dinajpur to help them overcome food insecurity and build a future with dignity. When families have the tools to protect their livelihoods, they are better equipped to stay resilient and keep their children safe.
