Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) makes rice farming more sustainable

Earlier this year, the United Nations warned of a growing global water crisis, an emerging era of “water bankruptcy,” in which scarcity is driven not only by depletion but also by irreversible loss. The impacts are far-reaching, but fall most heavily on smallholder farmers. As pressures on water, labor, and climate intensify, rethinking how rice is grown is no longer optional, but essential. This World Water Day, we highlight how Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) makes rice farming more sustainable. By shifting away from traditional flooded systems, DSR reduces water use, lowers labor requirements, and supports more resilient production systems.
