Holding Power to Account: Climate Justice in the Wake of the ICJ Advisory Opinion

In July 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered a landmark advisory opinion. Unanimously, they ruled that countries have a legal obligation to prevent harm to the climate and to protect future generations from climate change. The outcome of over six years of activism, initiated by 27 young law students from the Pacific, the decision opens up new channels of action for the millions living on the frontlines of climate change.
