Artificial intelligence in the humanitarian sector | ALNAP's Explain series
In this presentation, Quito Tsui, core collaborator and researcher at the MERL Tech Initiative, and Linda Raftree, founder of the MERL Tech Initiative, explore the growing role of artificial intelligence in humanitarian work.
They examine the current landscape of AI use in the sector, clarifying the differences between generative and non-generative AI tools, and outline four main areas of application: improving efficiency, supporting institutional workloads, strengthening community engagement, and expanding humanitarian capabilities. The discussion also addresses key risks—including data gaps, bias, and privacy concerns—and highlights approaches for responsible and ethical AI adoption.
The episode concludes with practical guidance for humanitarian organisations, emphasising community-centred design, careful risk assessment, and the development of shared standards.
This video is part of ALNAP’s Explain series, which covers a range of topics such as inclusive humanitarian action, locally led responses, accountability to affected populations (AAP), the HDP nexus, and more.
