Micro-Nanoplastics: The fate of plastic waste from littering to nanoplastic

Micro-Nanoplastics: The fate of plastic waste from littering to nanoplastic

Plastic pollution does not disappear when it leaves our sight. Over time, discarded plastic items break down into smaller and smaller fragments, eventually becoming microplastics and even nanoplastics that can spread throughout ecosystems, water bodies, soils, and the food chain. In this fourth webinar of the Micro-/Nanoplastics Series, experts explore the pathways and environmental fate of plastics as they degrade from larger litter into microscopic and nanoscale particles. The session examines the processes driving plastic fragmentation, the challenges of detecting and understanding nanoplastics, and the implications for environmental protection and waste management. Organized by UNITAR and the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, this webinar contributes to ongoing efforts to strengthen knowledge and awareness on plastic pollution and its impacts across the full life cycle of plastics.
