World Day of Glaciers
21 March 2026
Glaciers are more than frozen landscapes. They store freshwater, regulate our climate, and support communities and ecosystems around the world. But they’re melting faster than ever due to climate change.
As glaciers retreat, they release Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), like #PFAS which are toxic chemicals that are released into the environment having been trapped in ice for decades. These chemicals can travel long distances, accumulate in living organisms and in the environment, and pose serious risks to human health and the environment.
Since 2019, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, FIS, has banned the use of fluorinated ski waxes, which include PFAS, as water-repellent chemicals. Recently, three Olympic skiers were disqualified after PFAS were detected in their equipment — a reminder that these “forever chemicals” are hazardous, and can be found everywhere, including our snow and ice.
This International Day of Glaciers, let’s raise awareness and support stronger global action on chemical pollution and climate protection. Our glaciers, and our future, depend on it.
