Leading women in WASH: Mavis Okyere’s journey in Ghana’s water sector
As a member of Equal Aqua, a World Bank platform promoting gender diversity in water sector careers, WSUP is proud to support female leaders in partner utilities and municipalities through a range of initiatives.
The water and sanitation sector has long faced challenges in attracting and retaining female talent. Despite women representing a large potential workforce, they make up only 18% of the global water and sanitation utility workforce. This is the story of one woman who is helping to change that narrative in Ghana.
Meet Mavis Okyere, Water Systems Manager – Juaso at Ghana’s Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA). Through WSUP’s ongoing Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) advocacy, and in line with the World Bank’s Equal Aqua platform, we aim to amplify women’s voices, explore the barriers and opportunities they face, and inspire a more inclusive future for WASH.
In this feature, Mavis shares her journey, the lessons she has learned, and the progress—and challenges—that shape her work on the frontlines of water and sanitation service delivery in Ghana.
