Cross-border preparedness and response: the UNECE Industrial Accident Notification System
Industrial accidents can occur suddenly and rapidly escalate, threatening lives, the environment and economies. The UNECE Industrial Accidents Convention supports countries in preventing, preparing for and responding to industrial accidents, including those capable of causing transboundary effects, through strong transboundary cooperation and information sharing. Central to this effort is the UNECE Industrial Accidents Notification (IAN) System – a secure platform that enables designated national Points of Contact to exchange early notifications, share critical technical information on accidents and potential impacts and request mutual assistance when needed. By supporting timely and accurate communication and more coordinated action among national authorities, the IAN System contributes to preparedness and response efforts, particularly when used alongside contingency plans, response measures and pollution containment, helping to reduce harm and support the protection of people and the environment.
