Takiyyat Ibrahim al-Gulshani - Taht al-Rab' Market, Historic Cairo
World Monuments Fund conducted interviews at Takiyyat Ibrahim al‑Gulshani and the nearby Taht al‑Rab’ Market in Historic Cairo, one of Egypt’s oldest centers for lantern production. Lantern making in this district dates back to Fatimid Cairo, when the need for light between Iftar and Sohour during Ramadan fostered a thriving craft tradition. Lantern shop owner Nabil Sheta and lantern manufacturer Mohamed Amin speak about the techniques, materials, and cultural significance behind their work.
World Monuments Fund’s involvement at Takiyyat al‑Gulshani includes supporting the long-term socioeconomic sustainability of the surrounding area, acknowledging that the historic lantern market remains an essential part of the community’s identity and economy. By documenting the perspectives of artisans and business owners, the project highlights the importance of preserving both the site and the living traditions that continue to define it.
