JJ Chalmers on the Impact of Blast Injuries | In Their Words | Save the Children UK
JJ Chalmers, TV presenter and former Royal Marines Commando, shared his experience of surviving a bomb blast, and his long road to recovery, which led to him becoming an Invictus Games medallist. He also reflected on the changing nature of modern warfare and the growing numbers of children who are getting caught up in explosive blasts as conflicts shift into urban areas and the rules of war are increasingly disregarded.

No child should have to learn to walk twice. And yet children’s lives are being blown apart by war. Bombs, drones, landmines and missiles destroy homes, schools and playgrounds. They disrupt childhoods. Take away independence and the freedom to just be a kid.
At Save the Children, we deliver support both immediately and for the long road back. We provide life-saving care when children are injured. We support long-term recovery, so children can move, learn and grow - right now, we’re working alongside Imperial College London to develop prosthetic limbs designed specifically for growing children. And we demand accountability when the rules meant to protect children are broken.
