From Eritrea to Tripoli: Survival Amid Conflict and Discrimination
We're working to get back to sea - because people are still risking everything, and their stories must be heard. With rescue ships detained and silenced, we’re one of the last witnesses out there. Today, we share the story of Samir and Sonia:
The young couple left Eritrea, and after reaching Sudan, walked for 3 weeks through the Sahara desert before arriving in Libya. There, they were exploited and ransomed.
Samir’s brother was treated so badly that he took his own life.
Sonia got pregnant, and when she was already in labour to deliver her baby, she was denied help at the hospital door, for being Christian.
They eventually took the sea with their little one, trying to escape Libya, and were rescued in May 2025, after 29h on the water.
They hope to become teachers again, and they already started teaching their son about love.
