Making Public Money Work for All: Lessons from 20 Years of the Open Budget Survey
🏛️ Making Public Money Work for All brought together development practitioners, civil society leaders, and policymakers in Washington, D.C. to mark 20 years of the Open Budget Survey — examining the persistent gap between fiscal policy on paper and outcomes in practice.
💰 Formal gains in budget disclosure have not always translated into greater accountability and equity. Tax systems create unequal burdens. Debt decisions remain outside public scrutiny. Social spending fails to reflect citizens' needs. Yet bright spots in government and civic-led reform show that more equitable and more responsive fiscal systems are possible.
🌍 Co-organized by IBP, the Keough School of Global Affairs, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the convening drew on two decades of Open Budget Survey data and country reform experience to sharpen one central question: what will it truly take to make public money work for all?
🎯 Essential viewing for policymakers, development practitioners, civil society advocates, and researchers committed to fiscal equity, transparency, and accountability. Press play and join the conversation. ✨
