Critical action 5: Doubling investment in the transition

Reaching net-zero by mid-century will rely on massive, clean electrification. There are six critical actions for the 2020s that will enable that necessary scale up in electricity deployment. The fifth action is to unlock financial flows for investment, especially in lower-income countries. On average, investment of $3.5tr a year is needed globally between now and 2050 and 70% of this is in the power system (e.g., low-carbon power generation, grids, and storage). Investment will need to grow from ~$1.5trn today to $2trn by 2025, $3trn by 2030. This requires a doubling of investment in high-income countries and China by 2030, but a four-fold increase in middle- and low-income countries. Watch the video to find out what other actions are needed to ensure a prosperous, greener economy is in reach.
