Improving management of medical waste in 13 countries of the Americas
With support from the Canadian government, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is collaborating with 13 countries to improve management of medical waste, including syringes, used laboratory and biological products, and electronic parts. Not only does poor management risk spreading disease, it also contributes to pollution of water, air, and soil, and generates carbon emissions from burning. Recently, PAHO led a fact-finding trip to Medellin, Colombia, where the countries received training and shared experiences and best practices.
