OAS and PAHO Hemispheric Program to Reduce Non-Communicable Diseases
In the Americas, one in three children and adolescents lives with overweight or obesity, and four out of five children are physically inactive. Unhealthy environments and a lack of physical activity impact the health, well-being, and learning of children, as well as the socioeconomic development of countries. Education and health sectors must work in an integrated manner to transform these realities. In response to this situation—and under the leadership of the Ministries of Education and Health across the Americas—the OAS and PAHO launched a hemispheric program on healthy food and physical activity policies in school settings.
