Living Seeds, Living Knowledge: Peasant Communities Safeguarding Our Future
Dynamic seed management by peasant communities is an essential pillar of the right to food, self-determination, and biodiversity conservation. It ensures the continuous adaptation of seeds to ecological conditions while preserving traditional knowledge and supporting peasant innovations.
The "Living seed houses" (Cases vivantes de semences paysannes) promoted by COASP-Mali are an example of a set of practices that combine seed selection and conservation with the transmission of knowledge and the strengthening of social relations through seed exchange between farmers. Implemented in a decentralized manner by peasants in their communities, they guarantee seed sovereignty and resilience.
