Gender-Based Violence in Off-Grid Solar
Over 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity which limits opportunities for education, health and economic development. Solar home systems (SHS) are transforming energy access in emerging markets by providing clean decentralised energy in areas which are not accessible by the grid. The gig workforce driving solar home system deployments offers an opportunity to increase diversity and empower women in green jobs. However, gig workers are faced with increasing gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) risks in the informal work models. There is a critical need for tailored guidance for the off-grid solar sector to support in identifying and managing the GBVH risks, both within the gig workforce and their direct operation.
The objective of this webinar is to provide participants with an understanding of GBVH risks, implications on businesses, basic mechanisms of implementing GBVH policies and procedures and approach to training within the off-grid solar sector. The webinar is being undertaken in collaboration with British International Investment Plc (the UK’s development finance institution) and the Global Off-grid solar industry association (GOGLA) and is open to businesses, investors and operators in the off-grid solar space in emerging markets.
