North Macedonia: The Ombudsperson and the Fight for Environmental Justice

Cleaning up an illegal dumpsite should not feel like a never-ending board game. But between paperwork, procedures and institutional dead ends, environmental justice can quickly become complicated. In North Macedonia, the Ombudsperson is helping citizens navigate the system and seek solutions. Since 2024, the Office has expanded its work on environmental justice, supporting efforts to protect the right to clean air, water and soil. Through the project “Strengthening the Role of the Ombudsperson in Environmental Justice,” UNDP is supporting stronger institutional capacities in cooperation with the Office of the Ombudsperson, OHCHR and GANHRI. The project is funded through UNDP’s Global Programme for Strengthening the Rule of Law, Human Rights, Justice and Security for Sustainable Peace and Development, with support from Norad, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.
