Child protection in action: every child deserves safety, care, and to be heard

Ted Chaban, UNICEF's Deputy Director, visiting Kanuya Transition Centre, in Bamako, Mali, advocates for actions that enables girls and boys who have faced violence, abuse, displacement, or separation from their families to find safety, care, and hope. At Kanuya, children receive immediate support, safe accommodation, and psychosocial care, while social workers help them understand their rights and seek durable family based solutions. As a temporary transit centre, children stay for a limited time while efforts are made to reunite them with families or identify safe alternative care options. When appropriate, education and life skills opportunities are also provided to ensure continuity and dignity. This work represents protection in action: from establishing critical safety protocols to supporting national efforts, alongside the Ministry in charge of families and children, to institutionalizing foster-care systems that provide sustainable, long term alternative care solutions for every child. The Kanuya Center’s activities are supported by UNICEF’s thematic protection funds as well as its regular funds.
