Speed saves lives: Leveraging new evidence on 7-1-7 to improve outbreak performance
The 7-1-7 target was built on the principle that timeliness in outbreak detection, notification and response saves lives. New evidence is now backing it. Groundbreaking research from Uganda, Resolve to Save Lives and the 7-1-7 Alliance showed for the first time that faster detection results in fewer cases, fewer deaths, and shorter outbreaks. New modeling from the Burnet Institute demonstrated that faster outbreak vaccination can prevent up to 80% of cases. These findings provide powerful evidence for countries, donors and partners advocating for investments in timely outbreak response systems.
On March 5, 2026, the 7-1-7 Alliance hosted a webinar featuring the researchers behind these breakthrough findings and exploring what it means for anyone who wants to maximize the impact of 7-1-7—not just as a measurement tool, but as a driver of the system improvements that deliver these life-saving outcomes.
Featured speakers included Sooyoung Kim, Principal Advisor in the Epidemic Intelligence Unit at Resolve to Save Lives and Dominic Delport, Infectious Disease Modeller at Burnet Institute.
