Epidemics That Didn't Happen: Early warning system in the Caribbean
How do you prevent diseases from spreading during major sporting events?
That’s the question Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) had to answer when tens of thousands of fans from around the world traveled to the Caribbean for the 2024 Men’s T20 cricket World Cup.
The agency developed an early warning system to track symptoms and cases of potential disease—providing the right information to the right people at the right time. Their preparation and swift response worked: During the tournament, the system captured 146 cases of potential disease, and there was no person-to-person spread of any disease.
CARPHA’s success shows how health systems dealing with sports tournaments and other mass gatherings can keep spectators safe.
