How a bundle of INTERVENTIONS saved baby Edul
Every year, 20 million babies are born prematurely or with low birthweight—and one million newborns do not survive.
Edul is one of the babies whose life was saved thanks to the dedication of healthcare workers trained through the Saving Little Lives program in Ethiopia’s war-impacted Tigray region. The program focuses on improving care for small and sick newborns and supporting the health workers who care for them.
Led by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and integrated into national healthcare plans, Saving Little Lives delivers a bundle of evidence-based neonatal interventions that address the leading causes of newborn mortality.
A cornerstone of the program is skin-to-skin Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). Through earlier implementation, KMC uptake increased from 5% to 80%. The program also includes strengthened labor and delivery care, as well as a neonatal intensive care (NICU) package focused on sepsis, respiratory distress, thermal care, and feeding.
Saving Little Lives is further supported by simulation-based training, on-site mentorship, and continuous quality improvement—helping healthcare workers build the skills and confidence needed to save newborn lives, even in the most challenging settings.
