How Solar lights and Latrines Improve Safety and health? Oxfam Somali - GFFO Project

Solar light installations reduce the occurrence of crime especially around the dark areas at night. Street solar lights were placed at water points, household latrines, main streets, and community centers. The communities reported that public lighting is an important way to prevent crimes, both in deterring perpetrators and increasing their visibility during night patrols, and that their installation reduced the occurrence of crime especially at night. Since their installation in villages such as like Farogul under Ceel Afweyn District, there was positive impact of solar lights on the life of beneficiaries as communities especially women and girls can now safely access water points, health facilities, marketplace, and latrines at night without fear of harm emanating from darkness. Movement at night has improved and community members move freely within the community settlements. In addition, multi-functional portable household solar lights were distributed to vulnerable IDPs and host communities to contribute to the safety and security of women and girls. The multifunctional solar lamps come with a built-in FM radio, removable torch, and phone charger. Phone chargers may enable women to earn a small income from charging other people’s phones and therefore reduce their vulnerability to exploitation. Phones are also an important source of light and communication. The multi-functional solar light distribution complements the WASH infrastructure as beneficiaries will receive solar lights to access latrines at night and increase mobility during night-time. Apart from lighting the solar lights will contribute to improved access to information by using FM radio.
