Integration of Indigenous Communities and Peoples in Forest Monitoring in Guatemala

FAO is supporting the Government of Guatemala in integrating Indigenous Peoples and local communities into the National Forest Monitoring System (SNMF) through the AIM4Forests program – Accelerating Innovation in Forest Monitoring. This process promotes dialogue to generate synergies that enable shared management of multi-level forest monitoring among the government, local communities, and Indigenous Peoples. The program is funded by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is leading the way in forest monitoring through the use of cutting-edge technology and sustainable technical solutions. In Guatemala, support focuses on three main areas: a) strengthening institutional capacities in monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) within the framework of REDD+; b) supporting the National Forest Inventory (NFI); and c) developing strategies to integrate local communities and Indigenous Peoples into multi-level forest monitoring linked to the SNMF.
