Improving biodiversity monitoring with integrated monitoring methods in Guyana #swmprogramme

Discover how innovative biodiversity monitoring approaches are improving conservation efforts by combining different advanced data collection methods into one powerful system. Through a partnership with Map of Life Solutions, researchers are generating higher-resolution, ground-truthed biodiversity insights to support smarter environmental policies and sustainable resource management. In Guyana, the approach has already identified 741 species using camera traps, soundscapes, and eDNA technologies, helping protect some of the world’s richest ecosystems. With support from the , 10 Amerindian villages have developed Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) guidelines to help shape decisions affecting their future. The initiative is led by the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme, which is co-funded by the European Union, the French Facility for Global Environment and the French Development Agency. It is being implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR-ICRAF) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
