Website URL and description of the video (maximum 1000 characters including spaces) In Kyrgyzstan, Soviet-era farming left thousands of tonnes of hazardous pesticides scattered across the country with no management system. FAO's project mapped 62 problem sites. Near the city of Osh, 90 tonnes of highest-risk chemicals were repacked by trained military personnel following international standards and moved to temporary storage. A national team for pesticide handling was created. Bio-remediation field trials using microorganisms to break down pollutants proved successful. A pilot container collection system in Sokoluk Region collected over 1 200 kg for safe disposal, now a blueprint for a national system. In September 2025, Kyrgyzstan launched its first electronic pesticide registration system. Medical staff were trained to diagnose pesticide exposure. Over 960 agronomists advise thousands of farmers on integrated pest management. Students at Kyrgyz National Agrarian University are learning IPM practices to replace Soviet-era chemical dependence.
