From poison to promise

From poison to promise

Across Central Asia, a toxic legacy is being addressed through FAO's Lifecycle Management of Pesticides project, financed by the Global Environment Facility. In Tajikistan, farmer Tuychi Shoev requested help to remove obsolete pesticides from a mini-landfill in his district. In response, FAO partnered with Tajikistan's Committee for Environmental Protection to remediate the site. More than 5 000 tonnes of polluted soil and 33 tons of obsolete pesticides were removed and transported to the Vakhsh landfill. Clean earth has been returned. Tuychi now plans to construct a lemon greenhouse and a cold storage facility on the restored land, creating employment for up to 25 residents. What was once a danger zone is now a place of development and new livelihoods. This is the legacy of FAO's commitment to a healthier Central Asia.
